Still time to visit the amazing Maize Maze

The delights awaiting summer visitors to Woodhall Spa increase year on year. At the beginning of August a new attraction was opened in Stixwould Road, one whose seeds had literally been sown earlier in the year – a maize maze. It has been open most days since then, and if you are quick you may still catch it as it’s open at weekends until the end of September

There’s some good thinking here. The maze itself was formed by strimming out the shape of a Lancaster bomber in a field of maize (aka sweetcorn,) to chime with the current Lancaster fever gripping the village, as Thumper and Vera, the only two airworthy Lancaster bombers, go through their paces over Lincolnshire. Good thinking too because the maze is only a short walk away from the Petwood Hotel, former home to the Dambuster pilots.

I took my grandchildren there a few days ago and they loved it. The idea to include a competition to find lions and monkeys hidden in the maze really caught their imagination, probably because the it was suggested by the owner’s 2 year old daughter Amelia. The are quite a few other surprises for the kids too, which I won’t give away, and picnics are welcome. The cost is very reasonable – under threes go free and you can get a family ticket for a tenner. No time limits either.

While my lot were trying to find their way out I had quite a long chat to Ben Booth, who owns the maze and operates it himself. He told me the maze has been pretty popular already, and he is keen to run it again next year, so if you have a hour or two to spare, why not add the maize maize to your Woodhall Spa holiday experience?
