To judge by the advertised programme, Festival 800, a ten day festival of live music, comedy, spoken word, street theatre, lectures and debate celebrating Magna Carta’s 800th anniversary will be very special, as the City of Lincoln hosts an impressive line-up of national and international artists and human rights activists.
What they all have in common is the desire to celebrate freedom of speech by making artistic responses to Magna Carta. This is a one-off opportunity to pick and mix from an eclectic variety of events and shows at various Lincoln venues, running from August 28 to September 6.
Among the highlights:
Protest songwriter Billy Bragg
Political folk-rock band The Levellers
Author, screenwriter and comedian Shappi Khorsandi
YouTube sensation Alfie Deyes
The family of civil rights activist Rosa Parks
Historian David Starkey
A 4m tall, Magna Carta sand sculpture by Paul and Remy Hoggard
Poet Laureate Dame Carol Ann Duffy, DBE, FRSL, Gillian Clarke, the National Poet for Wales, and Imtiaz Dharker, Holder of the Queen’s Award for Poetry.
