Thanks to Councillor William Gray for this report on yesterday’s mustard gas incident public meeting at the Petwood Hotel, where by all accounts it was standing room only:
“There was a thorough briefing on ‘Police Operation Saddleback’. 22 agencies have been involved. 14 ammunition boxes of have been recovered from Kirkby Woods. 13 boxes contained mustard gas bombs. These are now being destroyed safely away from the site.
10 gas canisters have been recovered from a lake in Stixwould. They had not leaked and therefore the lake has not been contaminated. 3 people have been arrested and are on bail.
A small area of land in the woods has been contaminated and decontamination will now take place. East Lindsey District Council will oversee this operation with the assistance of professionals. Kirkby Lane will remain closed at present and the site will be fenced to prevent access.
The public will be kept informed of the ongoing operation via a dedicated page on East Lindsey’s web site. There will also be regular updates on twitter and social media. A claim will be made to central Government to help cover the costs of the operation.”
