Local historian, writer and artist Edward Mayor invites you to a day at the Petwood Hotel dedicated to the art of Vincent Van Gogh, one of the world’s most loved painters. You can discover his life and work in the Garden Room, against the background of the hotel’s restored Peto gardens, and view five painted copies of Van Gogh’s great paintings in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, copied by Edward. The date for your diary is July 22, and the event runs from 11am to 4.30pm
At 2pm Edward will give an informal talk about the paintings he has copied and examine the myths which cling to the artist. Also on offer, a sumptuous collection of books and catalogues featuring every surviving Van Gogh painting, print and drawing, and even a chance to win a set of prints and a Petwood voucher by doing your own copy of a Van Gogh drawing. It’s a shame that Budgens have removed their noticeboard, but there are still plenty of events on the others, so here’s our selection for the month ahead. Take your pick: a trip to the BBC Gardener’s World and Good Food Show, a Big Band Night, a Banovallum Brass Concert, organ music at St. Peter’s or a good old car boot sale. Up to you!
This month’s visiting organist at Music for Woodhall will be Ryan Edwards. “Ryan’s continued popularity on the circuit could be a result of his fresh approach to organ playing which is reflected in the variety of styles of music in his concert programme. He understands the need to awaken new interest in the organ especially in his generation by appealing to both traditional and modern tastes.” He will be on stage at St Peter’s Church Hall, Woodhall Spa, 7.30pm. Earlier this month I noticed three rather nice videos on Youtube promoting the Lincolnshire Wolds which have now been compiled into one feature. There are quite a few scenes shot on our patch, dotted around the three original films, so it’s worth staying with it to the end. Why not sit back, take your mind off mustard gas down in the woods and see how many places or people you recognise!
Look what popped up on Facebook the other day – “a short clip from 2014 of the “two Lanc’s” flying over Petwood Hotel. Used as the officers mess for 617 Sqn not only is it steeped in history the building and gardens are beautiful. The video is courtesy of Chf Insp Phil Vickers of Lincolnshire Police – many thanks.”
“The last two airworthy Lancaster Bombers took to Lincolnshire skies together on August 13 as part of their UK Bomber Tour. Continue reading →
Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties that are not usually publicly accessible or would normally charge a fee. It also includes tours, events and activities that focus on and celebrate the local heritage of the area. Since 1994 Heritage Lincolnshire has coordinated Heritage Open Days within the historic county. This year’s festival will be one of the biggest yet, with over 140 free events. The theme is Freedom, Justice & Equality to mark the 800th anniversary of the Charter of the Forest, a copy of which is held alongside Magna Carta at Lincoln Castle.
The festival brochure was launched at the Lincolnshire Show on 21st June. It is also available from libraries, tourist information centres and heritage sites across the county and from our offices in Heckington. You can also download a printable copy here.
A group of gardens and nurseries, all with regular public opening times, have joined together in order to offer a range of additional services to the public. These include not only a collection of the most exciting gardens that may be visited anywhere in Lincolnshire or Eastern England, but information on visiting the county of Lincolnshire as well.
